How do injury lawyers charge?
Many injury firms use a contingency fee, which means they are paid from what is recovered. Fishwick & Associates PLC describes its terms this way: for personal injury cases, the firm works on a contingency basis, with no attorney fee unless it recovers compensation on your behalf. It also says the initial consultation is free.
Whatever firm you choose, ask:
What percentage will you charge?
What costs do I owe, and when?
Are costs taken out before or after the fee?
Will I get the agreement in writing?

Common questions
Do I need a lawyer after a car accident?
Not in every case. A lawyer can help if you are seriously hurt, fault is disputed, a government body is involved, or an insurer is pressing you. A short first conversation can help you decide. Ask each firm how it charges before you commit.
What is a contingency fee?
A contingency fee means the lawyer is paid only if the case recovers money, usually as a share of the recovery. Ask each firm what percentage it charges, what costs you owe, and whether costs are taken before or after the fee. Get the agreement in writing and read it before you sign.
What should I bring to a first meeting?
Bring what you have: the crash report or report number, photos, your insurance information and the other driver's, medical records and bills, letters from insurers, and your notes. If you do not have everything yet, go anyway. Write your questions down beforehand so you do not forget them.
How do I check a lawyer's license?
The Virginia State Bar lets you look up whether a lawyer is licensed in Virginia. Search the lawyer's name on the bar's website at vsb.org before you hire. It is a simple, free check. You can also ask the firm which attorney would handle your case.
